Two of the four Bifidobacterium strains in HAPPYGUT are the ones least likely to appear in marketing and among the most interesting biologically. Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium bifidum are both early residents of the human gut, and both work in the large intestine.
Bifidobacterium bifidum: the early coloniser
Included at 10 Billion CFU to support intestinal barrier and microbial balance.
We describe B. bifidum as an early-coloniser strain, and that is a literal description. Bifidobacteria are among the very first organisms to establish themselves in the human gut, arriving in infancy well before most other groups. B. bifidum is one of the founding members of the community.
Its role here is barrier support — the same job L. rhamnosus and L. plantarum contribute to in the small intestine, but performed further along the tract. Barrier support is where our formula overlaps most deliberately: three strains from two families, covering the same function in different regions.
Bifidobacterium breve: the fatty acid producer
Included at 10 Billion CFU to support microbial balance and digestive regularity.
The detail worth knowing about B. breve is that it is a short-chain fatty acid producer, and that is one of the more genuinely interesting things any bacterium does.
When bacteria in the large intestine ferment fibre, they do not simply consume it. They produce compounds as a result — short-chain fatty acids — and those compounds do not stay put. They are absorbed and used by the body, including by the cells lining the colon itself.
Which means the relationship runs both ways. You feed the bacteria fibre; the bacteria produce compounds your body uses. That exchange is the single best argument for eating fibre alongside a probiotic rather than expecting the capsule to work alone.
Why both, and not one
They are related organisms doing related work in the same neighbourhood, which might look like duplication. It is not.
Related bacteria differ in what they metabolise, how they establish, and the conditions they prefer. Including both broadens the coverage rather than doubling it — the same reasoning behind including L. casei and L. paracasei together.
In HAPPYGUT, these two complete the Bifidobacterium quartet alongside B. longum, covered in a resident of the large intestine, and B. lactis, covered in regularity, comfort and the immune-gut axis. Four strains, 40 Billion CFU, all working in the large intestine.
Feed them properly
Both of these strains ferment fibre. Dals, whole grains, millets, vegetables and fruit all supply what they need. Without it, they are capable organisms with nothing to work on.
That is the honest version of how a probiotic fits into a routine, and it is why we describe HAPPYGUT as support rather than a solution. The complete formula is in all 13 strains, and what each one does.
