Ingredient overview
What it is
Magnesium acts as a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme reactions. ATP, the molecule cells use for energy, normally functions while bound to magnesium.
- Scientific identity: Magnesium; body distribution: approximately 60% bone, remainder intracellular.
- How it works: Absorbed along the small intestine: Uptake is partly saturable and partly passive, so the absorbed fraction falls as the dose rises. Activates ATP: The cell's energy currency is only biologically active when bound to magnesium, which is why every ATP-using reaction needs it.
- Primary function: It contributes to normal energy metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve transmission and mineral balance.
- What it supports: Magnesium supports steady cellular energy, responsive muscles and a nervous system that can handle everyday demands.
- Important consideration: The elemental mineral amount is more meaningful than the weight of its source compound.
