Ingredient overview
What it is
Selenium is incorporated into specialised proteins called selenoproteins. These include antioxidant enzymes and enzymes that help regulate active thyroid hormones.
- Scientific identity: Selenium; incorporation: As selenocysteine, the 21st amino acid.
- How it works: Absorbed efficiently: Dietary selenium, largely as selenomethionine, is taken up well from the small intestine. Converted to selenocysteine: It is incorporated into proteins as a special amino acid rather than acting as a loose cofactor.
- Primary function: It contributes to normal antioxidant protection, thyroid function, immune activity and maintenance of hair and nails.
- What it supports: Selenium supports antioxidant enzymes, normal thyroid activity and the everyday maintenance of healthy hair, nails and immune function.
- Important consideration: The elemental mineral amount is more meaningful than the weight of its source compound.
