Probiotic

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus casei, now classified as Lacticaseibacillus casei, belongs to a closely related group of lactic-acid-producing bacteria. Accurate identification requires appropriate strain-level testing.

It contributes complementary fermentation activity within a balanced multi-strain digestive formula.

In everyday life, Lactobacillus casei supports a more balanced digestive environment through adaptable fermentation and complementary multi-strain activity.

Probiotic benefits are strain-specific. Verified strain identity, viable CFU and storage conditions are important quality considerations.

Ingredient overview

What it is

Lactobacillus casei, now classified as Lacticaseibacillus casei, belongs to a closely related group of lactic-acid-producing bacteria. Accurate identification requires appropriate strain-level testing.

  • Scientific identity: Lactobacillus casei; scientific identity: Lacticaseibacillus casei.
  • How it works: Ferments flexibly: As a able to use multiple fermentation pathways organism it produces lactic acid from simple sugars but can switch routes when those run short. Remains transient: It does not establish permanently and is cleared over days once intake stops.
  • Primary function: It contributes complementary fermentation activity within a balanced multi-strain digestive formula.
  • What it supports: Lactobacillus casei supports a more balanced digestive environment through adaptable fermentation and complementary multi-strain activity.
  • Important consideration: Effects depend on the exact bacterial strain, viable colony-forming units and appropriate storage conditions throughout shelf life.

Formulation rationale

Why we use it

CARPEDIEM selected Lactobacillus casei for a clearly defined role within a thoughtfully balanced formulation.

  • Formulation purpose: It contributes complementary fermentation activity within a balanced multi-strain digestive formula.
  • Used in: CARPEDIEM HappyGut 70B Probiotic and CARPEDIEM HappyGut 140B Probiotic.
  • Works alongside: Lactobacillus casei complements Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus to support everyday digestive wellness and complementary probiotic activity.
  • Meaningful contribution: Lactobacillus casei supports a more balanced digestive environment through adaptable fermentation and complementary multi-strain activity. Adds an adaptable bacterial culture to a balanced multi-strain probiotic formulation.
  • Quality and scientific context: Effects depend on the exact bacterial strain, viable colony-forming units and appropriate storage conditions throughout shelf life. Research is shown only when an ingredient-specific study demonstrates a relevant benefit.

Probiotic beverage containing Lactobacillus casei Shirota improves gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with chronic constipation

Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology

A double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised study over four weeks in 70 patients with symptoms of chronic constipation. Each participant took 65 mL per day of a beverage containing L. casei Shirota or a sensorially identical placebo, completing weekly questionnaires on gastrointestinal symptoms, well-being and stool habits alongside medical examination. Self-reported constipation severity and stool consistency improved from the second week onward.

A Double-Blind, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of Probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota in Stable Cirrhotic Patients

Nutrients

A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study of L. casei Shirota conducted across two UK hospitals in patients with clinical, radiological or histological evidence of stable cirrhosis. The trial assessed tolerability and immune and microbial parameters, and adds to the safety record of the strain in a medically vulnerable adult population.

The effect of probiotics on functional constipation in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 eligible trials covering 1,182 participants, yielding 16 separate interventions including seven of Bifidobacterium lactis alone and four of Lactobacillus casei Shirota. Overall, probiotics reduced whole gut transit time by 12.4 hours and increased stool frequency by 1.3 bowel movements per week, with the effect on frequency and consistency significant for B. lactis. No serious adverse events were reported.
