Probiotic

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus, now classified as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, is a bile-tolerant bacterium within the casei group. Different strains can show different functional characteristics.

It contributes to multi-strain formulas designed to support normal digestive balance and microbial diversity.

In everyday life, Lactobacillus rhamnosus supports a balanced intestinal environment and day-to-day digestive confidence as part of a well-designed probiotic blend.

Probiotic benefits are strain-specific. Verified strain identity, viable CFU and storage conditions are important quality considerations.

Ingredient overview

What it is

Lactobacillus rhamnosus, now classified as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, is a bile-tolerant bacterium within the casei group. Different strains can show different functional characteristics.

  • Scientific identity: Lactobacillus rhamnosus; scientific identity: Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus.
  • How it works: Ferments carbohydrate: As a member of the casei group it produces lactic acid from available sugars, taking up nutrients and surface space locally. Remains transient: It is cleared over days once intake stops, so any contribution is tied to continued daily intake.
  • Primary function: It contributes to multi-strain formulas designed to support normal digestive balance and microbial diversity.
  • What it supports: Lactobacillus rhamnosus supports a balanced intestinal environment and day-to-day digestive confidence as part of a well-designed probiotic blend.
  • Important consideration: Effects depend on the exact bacterial strain, viable colony-forming units and appropriate storage conditions throughout shelf life.

Formulation rationale

Why we use it

CARPEDIEM selected Lactobacillus rhamnosus for a clearly defined role within a thoughtfully balanced formulation.

  • Formulation purpose: It contributes to multi-strain formulas designed to support normal digestive balance and microbial diversity.
  • Used in: CARPEDIEM HappyGut 70B Probiotic and CARPEDIEM HappyGut 140B Probiotic.
  • Works alongside: Lactobacillus rhamnosus complements Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium lactis to support everyday digestive wellness and complementary probiotic activity.
  • Meaningful contribution: Lactobacillus rhamnosus supports a balanced intestinal environment and day-to-day digestive confidence as part of a well-designed probiotic blend. Adds a bile-tolerant culture that complements other lactic-acid-producing bacteria.
  • Quality and scientific context: Effects depend on the exact bacterial strain, viable colony-forming units and appropriate storage conditions throughout shelf life. 1 ingredient-specific study is included because the research reports a relevant benefit.

Ingredient intelligence

How it works

A bile-tolerant culture with microscopic surface hairs that help it hold on.

Step 01 / 04

Handles bile.

Bile breaks down most bacteria in the upper gut. This species tolerates it unusually well, so more arrives intact.

01 / 04

Taxonomy

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus

Adhesion

Pili - surface hairs, strain-dependent

Fermentation

Flexible - switches route by fuel

Gut behaviour

Transient, bile-tolerant

Lactobacillus GG in the prevention of gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections in children who attend day care centers: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal

In a randomized double-blind trial in children attending day care, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was associated with fewer upper respiratory infections and fewer respiratory-symptom days, while gastrointestinal outcomes were not significantly reduced. The results apply to the LGG strain and study population.

Systematic review with meta-analysis: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in children and adults

Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials covering 1,499 participants, searching Cochrane, MEDLINE and EMBASE up to July 2015. Across 11 trials with 1,308 participants, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was associated with a lower rate of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea compared with placebo or no additional treatment, from 22.4% to 12.3% (relative risk 0.49).

Efficacy of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in treatment of acute pediatric diarrhea: A systematic review with meta-analysis

World Journal of Gastroenterology

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 randomised controlled trials, searching EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Central Register up to April 2019. Pooled results showed reduced duration of acute diarrhoea with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG compared with control, with a larger effect at doses of 10 billion CFU per day or above.
